Welcome to the Strategic Plan for the Washington-Ireland Program Alumni Network (WIPAN), covering the period 2005-2007. This marks the first attempt by WIPAN to devise and implement a strategic plan. It has been developed as a mechanism to bring clarity and coherence to WIPAN and build on the evident talents, contacts and friendships of its members. The plan comes at a time of significant internal and external challenge. WIPAN finds itself uniquely placed to influence and bring together a wide diaspora of alumni. Against this backdrop is continued uncertainty regarding the role and purpose of the WIPAN body and how it should operate.
This strategic plan addresses these uncertainties. Just like the Washington-Ireland Program experience taught us, the philosophy is to 'think big'. Believing that young people hold the key to the future, WIPAN aims to become a unique forum to promote and strengthen public service and leadership. WIPAN aspires to be the most innovative and successful organisation of its kind on the island of Ireland. In doing so, it is our intention to ensure that membership of WIPAN is just as rewarding and prestigious as the Washington Ireland Program – the one common experience that all alumni share. The hope and expectation is to take dreams and good ideas and create structures to make them reality.
The strategic plan has been developed in consultation with alumni and stakeholders across Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States. I take this opportunity to sincerely thank the committee, alumni and stakeholders who have taken the plan to this critical point. I also wish to thank the many alumni who have inspired this plan through their commitment to and participation in alumni ventures in the past. The implementation of this plan is now a dynamic process and we look forward to your involvement as we strive towards achieving our strategic objectives.
Note - After a lenghty consultation process, the Strategic Plan was adopted by the WIPAN Executive Committee on March 27th, 2005.
